PAUL  STRISIK
 (1918-1998)

Paul Strisik painted light and color in all its manifestations. He went beyond mere description to explore the reasons why things look the way they do. There is a luminosity in Strisik’s skies that glances off the earth, glosses the surface of the water and reveals his excitement and emotional involvement with the subject. He was a dedicated plein air painter, finding that even his briefest outdoor studies serve better than photographs to carry him back to the subject reminding him of the feelings, the light and the mood of the place. An occasional interior or still life offered him a change of pace from his outdoor landscapes. He worked in both oils and watercolors.

Strisik studied at the Arts Student League in New York with Frank Vincent Dumond. It was from Dumond that he learned about cause and effect, to learn what causes appearances in order to paint the effect with understanding.

Paul Strisik was a nationally acclaimed painter and member of the most prestigious organizations in America, including Academician in the National Academy of Design, National Academy of Western Art, American Watercolor Society, and the Santa Fe Watercolor Society, Hudson Valley Art Association, Rockport Art Association (Past President), Copley Society of Boston (Copley Master), Knickerbocker Artists, Oil Painters of America, The Guild of Boston Artists and many others. He had numerous one man shows and participated in many national exhibitions including the Royal Watercolor Society, in London. His paintings hang in many museums and prominent collections. In his lifetime, he won nearly 200 awards for his paintings including 15 gold Metals.

What is perhaps most surprising to his collectors, but not to other artists of his caliber, is how he humbly admitted how challenging painting remained, no matter how experienced he became. He once explained, “Each year, you understand more. You realize the complexity of putting together a good painting. When you are young, you figure that someday you’ll become more proficient and it will be easy. That never happens. Working as an artist is like struggling to get over a mountain, only to find that a bigger one lies ahead.”
