LEONARD  REEDY
(1899-1954)

Leonard Reedy, “Chicago’s Cowboy Painter” was a painter of the Wild West. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and studied at the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts. He was a great admirer of Fredrick Remington and Charles Russell. Like Remington, Reedy lived in the great open spaces and was at home on the Great Plains, the desert country, the mountains as well as the mining and timber camps. He worked as a ranch hand, he roamed with the Indians and over a period of many years he gained an extensive knowledge of Western life and the subjects he loved to paint.

No doubt his great love and admiration for the early rough and rugged West decided for him what to paint. He preserved and described action which showed characters true to their habits and period; Frontier towns, gold rush days, the stagecoach, the hold up, the covered wagon, Buffalo Bill and his scouts, soldiers and the Indian war fare; the hardships and struggles of our nation’s history.  He worked in both watercolor and oil, and was a master storyteller who captured the West in a direct and honest way.
