LOUIS  HOVEY  SHARP

(1874-1946)

 

   Born in Glencoe, IL on July 27, 1874, Louis Sharp was a landscape painter on the grand scale. Around 1910, Sharp studied privately with Chase Duveneck, Charles Boutwood, and at the Art Institute of Chicago.  He moved on to sketch for a brief time at Walpi, on the Hopi reservation in Arizona.  In 1914 he settled in Pasadena., CA.  For the following 15 years he maintained studios in both  California and in Taos , New Mexico.  He also spent months at a time at the Grand Canyon painting scenes for the Santa Fe Railroad.  Sharp died in Pasadena,CA. in 1946.

   Louis Hovey Sharp is listed in the Smithsonian Institution Inventory of American Paintings, a member of: California Art Club; California  Watercolor Society;  Painters & Sculptures of LA.,  Panama-California Expo (San Diego) 1915 winning the silver and bronze medals.
